First Day Being an Intern
It was 9a-CDT, and I already officially started a widely anticipated internship with a bang. I am interning with three other students, one from UW-Stevens Point and one from Michigan. Today, my big project was given to me, and the big issue this summer is about the tobacco taxes, especially the outrageous increases being proposed by Governor Doyle. I am not a smoker, but I beleive that it is a person's own choosing if they want to smoke or not. Most smokers are blue collar workers, and if this cigarette tax is increased, well, more people will either go to Illinois, the Indian Reservations, or the internet. Today, we are starting to work with a major tobacco company, and we are targeting certain state legislators who blantanly oppose the rights of smokers or those who filp-flop votes. Our target areas are Janesville, Beloit, Green Bay, Racine/Kenosha, La Crosse, and other bordering towns as how much this could affect Wisconsin. We are now setting the stage for the summer as I will be leading a tour throughout pivotal areas of Wisconsin, and be on the lookout, because we are taking our mascot TenPence the pig to an event near you. Also, we will have computers with the best wi-fi, so you can e-mail your legislator on the spot, you are opposed to this tax. Right now, Wisconsin does not need regressive taxation that could cause more revenue loss than revenue gain, as states like Michigan and New Jeresy who passed outlandish cigarette taxes. At the end of day one, I am feeling real happy that yes I may make a difference if Wisconsin's taxpayers are saved from a bad budget like what is being proposed in the State Capital.
